U2 ended their string of shows at the O2 London with a spectacular concert on Tuesday. As they’ve been around for nearly 40 years, the show was also something of a look at the band’s history through the music, as well as some of the things that inspire their lyrics. Bono stated that some of the songs seem to come almost fully formed while others take longer to write; that’s something that as a writer I can really relate to.

The musical journey through U2’s history was accompanied by a wonderful screen that showed photos, graphics, and videos, which illustrated their music and the messages contained in the song lyrics.

There was a touching tribute to Bono’s late mother, Iris.

What the above video doesn’t show was that while this song was playing, the screen was showing photos/video images of his late mother. Together, it made quite emotional viewing. It certainly brought a tear to my eye.

The set up of the stage made the concert feel like a much more intimate gig. They definitely used the space well, with two circular stages—one on each side of the arena—and a walkway in between where the massive screen was situated.

I think most fans would have had a brilliant view.

Bono’s voice is still amazing after all these years. He also has a very magnetic stage presence.

The band played songs from the past all the way up to the brilliant new album, including: Where The Streets Have No Name, With or Without You, Pride (In The Name of Love), Every Breaking Wave, Until The End of The World, Mysterious Ways, Vertigo, Song For Someone, Beautiful Day, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Raised By Wolves… and more.

During the performance, one young fan was invited up onto the stage to dance along with to a couple of songs. She was also given a mobile camera to take video footage while U2 were playing. At first appearing a bit star-struck (unsurprisingly!), she soon settled in and seemed quite at home there. I’m sure that will be an experience she won’t forget for a while! :)

As this band have always had their finger on the pulse of world events and have supported many charities over the years, there were also some political messages throughout the performance, calling for world peace and support for the refugees fleeing Syria. They also encouraged fans to donate to the charity Red, which aims to end the transmission of HIV from mothers to their babies. I thoroughly enjoyed the concert. Although I have been a fan of the band since the ‘80s, it was the first time I’ve seen them live; mainly due to the fact that their tickets sell out within minutes of going on sale! U2 retain the passion for the music that they had in the early days, and it was an impeccable performance that was definitely worth the wait! :)
